Hurricanes A Comin’

When summer hits— so does hurricane season!  I have been blessed to not have to evacuate during a hurricane.  But boy oh boy, I am NOT looking forward to the time when I will have to.  Tropical storm Cindy was enough for me– and that was way too early in the season. I cannot imagine how the next 3 months will go.

There is a big debate in the chicken world.. What do you do with your flock when you have to evacuate?  Some good ole common sense is what is needed in this situation.  There are several steps you can take in order to make sure your chickens are out of harms way.  Throughout this article, I will go over some ideas on what you can do to keep your flock safe.

 Take them with you!

This is not ideal for people who have an entire flock of chickens.  For me, especially now that we are down to one currently, I can put Pearl into a cage and along for the ride.  Can you imagine?! 2 children, 4 dogs, and a chicken?  Oh Lawd!

Bring them indoors!

Bring those crazy chicks inside 😉 Do you have a garage? Do you have an enclosed space from the weather? This is always a viable option! Take them out of the wind. If you have to evacuate, then it is a safer option if you cannot take them with you!  Leave plenty of water and food for them if you have to leave.  Create nesting boxes with sand, hay, or wood chips, that will keep them warm.  As with every animal in a storm, chickens too get scared. make the proper arrangements to keep them safe.

Lock them in their coop!

When you have too many– always make sure they are locked up safe.  Out of the rain, wind, hail, tornadoes, and debris that hurricanes bring with it.  You are still risking that their coop is strong enough to withhold a storm of that nature, but at least they will be out of harms way with everything else.  If you lock them in their coop, and you have a mobile coop, make sure to put it in a location safe for them.  For instance, away from trees, maybe up against a wall of the house, under a shed out of the storm.  If you have a stationary coop, make sure all windows are boarded and that there is enough ventilation for them inside.

Other Basic Things to Do!

Stock up on feed.  Depending on the category of the hurricane, you will need to take measures as far as food goes. Once the hurricane hits, supplies will be limited and stores will be closed!

Have enough water.  Make sure that you have enough water.  A chicken can go through at least 1 gallon of water every three days.  Make sure you adjust for however many chickens you have and that if you are evacuating without them, you leave enough for them to make it through.

3 feet rule.  Always store food and emergency vet supplies for your chicken 3 feet above your floor.   This applies more so to people who are living in a place that floods easily.

Electricity.  This applies to both outdoors and indoors.  Make sure everything is unplugged wherever the chickens are.  Make sure that their coops are not in the way of a power line in case it falls.  If indoors, make sure nothing is plugged into the walls and everything stored properly while gone.

I hope this list helped you prepare to keep your flock safe.  Although it is not an exhaustive list, all of the main points have been addressed.  Do you have any great tips in hurricane preparedness? Leave a comment and let us know!!  Happy and Safe Hurricane season to you all!

Our Top 10 Favorite Chicken Treats

There are so many awesome Ideas for treats and the chickens really love them!  Of course, we have picked our top treat- the ones that our girls love the most.  It is important to do your research and find out what is healthy and unhealthy for your girls (and boys if you have them). I did a lot of research on the good vs. the bad with chickens.  For Instance, nothing that has pits in them or something they can choke on.  The best list of good foods vs. bad foods that I have found is here: https://itsasunshineyday.wordpress.com/2015/12/21/dont-feed-your-chickens-this-a-printable/.

I chose last spring to go ahead and grow certain things that have a dual purpose to our chickens.  For instance, I grew parsley.  Rosy loves to eat the parsley when she free ranges in our backyard.  Parsley is a great source for enhancing egg laying and different types of Vitamins. It is also great to spread in nesting boxes and their coop. Lavender is another favorite of mine-  also used to in nesting boxes/coop to keep insects away- a type of repellant.  For a great guide on the best herbs to grow that your chicks will love, visit  http://www.hobbyfarms.com/5-herbs-your-chickens-will-love-4/

With that, here are my girls top favorite treats

10-favorite-chicken-treats

  1. Happy Hen Treat Mealworms(Ugh Gross!) Yes, this is my girls #1 snack food.  100% natural dried worms.
  2. Wild Bird Seeds–  For some reason, Rosy and Pearl love to go and eat all the bird food that has dropped on the ground.
  3. Watermelon – Perfect during the summer.  The girls would eat a whole one in no time at all if I let them.
  4. Hawaiian Break – They get this every three months.  I have a family member who is in charge of communion at our church every three months.  It is said that any left overs from communion are to go back to earth in which our bread comes from, therefore the chickens, every week during that third month, will get whatever is leftover.
  5. Vegetables – The girls like most of our leftovers- their favorite seems to be broccoli.  At least if my kids won’t eat it, they will!
  6. HotCakes – This is a treat that we found at Tractor Supply-  It was a log of seeds, worms, and healthy things that are natural foraging.
  7. Treat Blocks – These are square blocks that are made up of seeds and dried worms.  Great entertainment to keep the chicks busy!
  8. Leftover Foods – Often when we have leftovers (if it is on the approved list for chickens) , we give them whatever we ate for that night or week.
  9.  Pumpkins – Did you know chickens love pumpkins?!  Well, my Pearl does at least.  Don’t just throw away those pumpkins after Halloween- give them to your chicks!
  10.  Insects/worms/ and whatever else they find in the yardYES! we let our girls free range as much as possible- usually this means locking the dogs in their kennels for a couple hours, but it is the most beneficial source of food and way of living for chickens.

All of the treats are incorporated into the girls daily meal which always includes a scoop or two of laying pellets.  Let’s not forget WATER!  Water is the most important thing for your chickens- they should have fresh water everyday to keep them laying. When they do not get enough, you will see them skip days laying eggs.  I think it is important to balance your chickens to give them the best possible. When you have happy and stress free chickens, you have more eggs.. and frankly, a happy mom to go with it!

Why I Started

Many people have asked me, why do you have chickens? Aren’t they too much to take care of with work, children, a family, and volunteering?  I always laugh it off and say, well, what else would I do?  So you can imagine that when I decided to start a blog about it all… well, lets just say, some think I have gone crazy.  And some days, well, I sure feel like I have.

I use to blog back in the day–  more so about life experiences.  That just didn’t really seem like enough- I need to blog about purpose, more than just little things in life that seemed irrelevant to the next person that I talked with.  So, I gave up.  I focused on family, my career, and striving for more in my life.   Now, some days, I feel like I have it all, and then not enough.  So with that, here I am again.. which brings me to what I consider a funny story to how all this got started.

I have a BFF, her name is Danielle.  You know when you meet someone and it is just an instant connection- a click that you very rarely find in other people when it comes to friendship?  Well that was us.  One instance brought us together.. nannying.  Who would have though that literally 8 years later, we would still be just as strong of friends (minus the distance) as we were the week we met.  She is an inspiration- she has been with me through my very highs and my very lows.  She knows it all.  D started blogging, about her life.. the trials and tribulations of a disease that she is battling daily,  one that even being around her, I see has changed her- her ways of living, eating, exercise, etc.  As I was reading her blog, which you can find here: http://allisphairinloveandwar.com/ , I realized that she wanted to spread the word. She wanted people to know that someone diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, can indeed make changes to live a better life..she had a purpose!  It was then that I realized, although my blogging would be very different, that I missed it and wanted to give it another go.. so here starts the story to how I created Bitch Bak Up… a blog about chickens, life, and what not to do.

I had a purpose.  I get questions daily on things I do, as a beginner, to take care of my chickens.  What do you use in the coop?  What if the chickens aren’t laying eggs?  Which coop is better? (Verdict still out on that one- the one we have is just WAY to small.) How many chickens do you have? When do you have too many….or not enough?  As I was talking to Danielle about blogging, she encouraged me to start something about chickens…  man that can be limiting..  and yet oh so many avenues and adventures.  I started looking for a name-  I threw out different names that had chicken in it… but I knew I wanted to be versatile- I wanted it to be more- be everything.  At that point, I had a lot going on- dealing with a lot of b*tchy people.  I was over it.  Danielle was helping me brain storm and she told me the only thing she could think of was Bak Bak-  my pinterest board for all my chickens!  She replied (after telling her my latest drama in my life), BakBakB*tchBak- I knew then and there she was onto something!  Literally…could. not. stop. laughing.  After a few bit emoji replies she sent me B*tch Bak Up— you know, like B*tch Back Up. Perfect!  I know a few people like that.. that needed some major backing up.  😉

And with that, B*tch Bak Up was created…  we decided on doing this together..  hey, maybe one day, one of us will be famous for it!  ILY D. <3
